maskini wa mungu. couldn't someone (even the burgeoning potbelly in the background) have the sense to save the poor child the agony of watching this?
this situation if not arrested quickly will spread to other towns.

It is indeed puzzling that the child was not immediately pulled out of the car. Instead, idlers look on while a photographer takes his snaps. Very odd people, Kenyans.

this, good people, is what someone would rightly say, throwing raw human waste on a fan in a room packed with adults! as i will be telling mzee kibaki in the relevant thread,he,as the commander in chief of all armed forces must take the full responsibility of the killing and the aftermath. he was responsible for rogo's security just as he is responsible of all persons in the territory of kenya.that is one of the reasons he is earning those hefty allowances,at least to the best of my knowledge. i am looking beyond what the uk guardian is reported(see the relevant excerpt below). my concern is that a war time president who has dragged us in an intractable warfare(see my thread on bring back our troops home now) is not only outed by what an australian newspaper that i have just read calls assassination but has heightened kenyans risks. m7 who according to some media reports is still wrought with anger and literally lost for words on the exposure in the chink of his armour that was the recent chopper crashes in kenya, must finally be watching the events keenly.and so are other regional leaders to whom destabilization of means an act of war.i have no time to say how brand kenya suffers when mombasa bleeds as is now. bbc wont have courage to call it assassination, simply saying he was shot dead but instructively calls him al-shabaab supporter but here is the quote by guardian of uk: The attack has brought to the surface tensions in a city established centuries ago by Muslim traders from the Arabian peninsula and the Indian subcontinent, now home to hundreds of thousands of people of Arab descent and a large Somali population.

The pot belly could do nothing...

I strongly condemn the incredible killing of Sh. A. Rogo just like the PM Raila Odinga and Deputy PM Uhuru Kenyatta.
I expect the Muslim Clerics and leaders especially those from Mombasa to also condemn the killing of Innocent Kenyans ( like the Lady who was killed becoz of wearing a Jeans in Moi Av. ) and the destruction of Churches.
Everybody is acting to slow to contain the events.

I did, however, make a reference to the idle onlookers that you can clearly see in that photo and to the person who must have been snapping the photos. As to why the situation should be puzzling, I leave thinking about that as your homework for today.

B6,
Please be careful on what you speak of. Think of its possible implications. This incident paints a more cmplex status of the world affairs than we can dare deliberate in here. There is more than meets the eye and this is one of those moments I choose to "bite my tongue" lest I get misconcieved.
Bottom line is, sadly, violence begets violence. Human beings have always been the best and the worst members of the animal kingdom!
My thoughts and condolences are with all those who may lost their loved ones, and sincerely wish and pray for quickest recovery upon those injured or harmed in any way.

www.the-star.co.ke/national/national/91562-aboud-rogo-fact-boxAboud Rogo was born in Siyu Island of Lamu county in about 1968. He got his basic madrassa education in the island but dropped out to try business activities ranging from fishing, poultry keeping and running small shop in the area. He relocated to Mombasa in 1989. In the 1990s during the clamour for the registration of Islamic Party of Kenya, Rogo served as a youth activist operating from Kongo Mosque in Likoni and participated in the street demonstrations. In 1998 security agencies suspected him of playing a peripheral logistical role in the bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi. He married Khaniya Said Saggar Said, the daughter of a prominent terror suspect. Four years later, in 2002, Rogo was arrested in connection with Kikambala hotel bombing together with the his father in law, Said Saggar Ahmed, Kubwa Mohammed Seif and Salmin Mohammed Khamis. In May this year, Attorney General Githu Muigai said that the government lost the case against the Kikambala suspects because key prosecution witnesses were frightened to testify. Their release in 2005 coincided with a government crackdown on Muslim radicals. Some were deported and others left the extremist groups creating a leadership vacuum. Aboud Rogo then established contacts with groups in Somalia and used his madrassa, Sirajul Munir in Mtwapa, to recruit Kenyan youths to Somalia. Last year the Council of Imams and Preachers identified his mosque, Masjid Musa in Majengo, as among three recruiting youth to join the Al Shabaab. The recruits were lured with religious promises and around Sh80,000 each. The youth were also offered military training that would be useful in liberating the coastal land from foreigners. This promise proved very appealing among Digo youth and the Revolutionary Republican Council (the precursor of the Mombasa Revolutionary Council) leadership in south coast. In 2007, Rogo, disheartened by the defeat of Islamic Union Courts in Somalia by the Ethiopian forces intensified his indoctrination of Muslim youths with a weekly lecture at his Masjid Musa in Mombasa. The lectures portrayed the Somalia war as the ultimate jihad where anyone who died will be a martyr. Among the fatwas he issued was that it was haram (forbidden by Islamic law) to work for the government of Kenya. He also produced CDs and other materials praising the al Qaeda leadership. Rogo visited Somalia in 2009 where he reportedly received military training from foreign jihadists in Somalia. Prior to his death, there was speculation that Rogo was working with foreign secret services despite preaching radicalism. Rogo was placed on a US sanctions list in July for "engaging in acts that directly or indirectly threaten the peace, security or stability of Somalia". The UN Security Council imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on him at the same time and accused him of being the "main ideological leader" of Kenya's al-Hijra group, also known as the Muslim Youth Center, which is viewed as a close ally of al-Shabaab. Rogo and Samir Khan had been questioned over their alleged involvement in the recruitment of Kenyan youth to join the Al Shabaab as well as weapons including grenades which police believe were among those used in the June bombing of a night club in Mombasa and churches in Mtwapa. In April, Samir Khan's badly mutilated body was found in Tsavo forest, hundreds of kilometres from where he and a friend were abducted as they traveled in a bus.

this guy's killing makes no sense.
as alleged, he has ties to al shabaab
we have reports from the kdf that al shabaab have been pounded to oblivion and are all but extinct
in light of such success, why kill this man
who stands to benefit from this death

Human beings have always been the best and the worst members of the animal kingdom! My thoughts and condolences are with all those who may lost their loved ones, and sincerely wish and pray for quickest recovery upon those injured or harmed in any way. Abdulmote, you're right. It would behove me to name my sources or face the music Alai style. Thankfully, this is all public domain stuff thanks to the ICC trials & Wikileaks US Embassy cables. Both were duly reported by none other than the Daily Nation on three separate occasions: (1) 5 mid-level Mungiki commanders outted by Ocampo but at this stage were un-named by DN on September 24, 2011: www.nation.co.ke/News/politics/Ocampo+names+five+MPs+as+Mungiki+commanders+/-/1064/1242372/-/tm0xhnz/-/index.html(2) By the following day DN names 2 out of the 5 as they probably came out denying any links to the gang: www.nation.co.ke/News/politics/I+helped+Kikuyus+fight+off+Kalenjins+says+ex+MP+/-/1064/1243016/-/item/1/-/6gvp5h/-/index.html(3) By March 1, 2012 the DN was able to quote the US Embassy Cables & tie in visa bans issued in early 2008 to the violence. Those outted were as follows: "To follow up on recent statements by Assistant Secretary Jendayi Frazer and the Ambassador indicating that the Department will review the visa eligibility of Kenyan politicians and businessmen suspected of supporting, inciting, or perpetrating violence in Kenya, Post delivered eight letters on February 5, signed by the Ambassador, to the following individuals: -- Richard Ngatia, businessman with PNU links suspected of funding Kikuyu youth groups engaged in violence. -- Njenga Karume, former minster with PNU ties suspected of having links to the Mungiki (Kikuyu mafia) and other related criminal organizations. -- John Mututho, PNU MP for Naivasha suspected of funding Kikuyu youth engaged in ethnic violence. -- Joshua Kulei, businessman with ODM ties suspected of financing Kalenjin youth groups engaged in ethnic violence. -- Henry Kosgei, ODM MP for Tinderet suspected of supporting Kalenjin youth groups engaged in violence. -- William ole Ntimana, ODM MP for Narok North, suspected of inciting inter-ethnic violence. -- Zakayo Cheruiyuot, ODM MP for Kuresoi, suspected of inciting inter-ethnic violence. -- Kabando wa Kabando, PNU MP for Mukurweini, suspected of organising and inciting inter-ethnic violence. On February 8, Post conveyed letters to an additional five individuals, as follow. Text of the letters sent was similar or identical to the text reproduced reftel. -- Kihara Muttu, Deputy Chairman, Electoral Commission of Kenya, suspected of accepting bribes to fix election results tally at ECK Headquarters. -- Jack Tumwa, Commissioner, Electoral Commission of Kenya, suspected of accepting bribes to fix election results tally at ECK Headquarters. --Joseph Dena, Jack Tumwa, Commissioner, Electoral Commission of Kenya, suspected of accepting bribes to fix election results tally at ECK Headquarters. --James Viscount Kimathi, former Member of Parliament with PNU ties, suspected of having links to Mungiki (Kikuyu mafia) and other related criminal organizations. -- Musa Cherutich Sirma, former Member of Parliament with ODM ties suspected of inciting and organizing inter-ethnic violence in Rift Valley Province." Note the ICC-esque balance of laying out the blame virtually equally to PNU & ODM. Also note the late Karume is the only leader directly linked to Mungiki. The others it seems supported non-Mungiki "youth groups". Read the full article here: www.nation.co.ke/-/1148/1117450/-/i1a3ehz/-/index.htmlI do agree with you that the Sheikh's demise has more to do with GWOT than local politics. I'm not so sure silence is the best way to curb the extra-judicial killings.

The following seem clear to me:
1. The Sheikh had been profiled and labelled a terrorist. But he was set free by a Kenyan court. He was therefore a target for assassination.
2. Some people have been keen on exciting a religious war in Kenya for sometime. I do not know why, but I have seen it from both 'Radical Muslims' and 'Conservative Christians'.
3. A proper intelligence service, focused on homeland security, would have known that Sheikh was a target and would have anticipated and advised the government appropriately. Instead, our intelligence are too busy focused on political projects and following Raila around to deal with important concerns.
4. Kenya is a secular state. You would think this is obvious - but not so. This means we are not run on religious principles or practices.
5. Muslims are NOT terrorists. Islam is a peaceful religion. Muslims and Christians have co-existed well for decades. We must resist the urge to immediately assume that terrorism is a problem brought about by Islam. Muslims must also shun baseless and provocative calls to 'defend their religion'.

The presence or absence of a police inspector general does not mean security organs start or stop working. You started this exchange by saying cops are receiving vague orders thus unable to stem riots. Their boss is headed to the ground tonight, perhaps he will issue strict and forthright orders, I dont know. He is the CiC. An 'interesting' letter in Nation today takes care of the above instead of focusing on my writing. Is it of any help for you? www.nation.co.ke/oped/Letters/-/440806/1489758/-/bj4x4u/-/index.htmlPerturbed by what was happening, a resident asked one of the officers why they were not acting decisively to stop the destruction and his response was disturbing. “The law does not allow us,” he said. Does it mean that the law envisaged a state of anarchy? I doubt it because the drafters of the Constitution were motivated by past ruthlessness by the police against harmless citizens.

We must resist the urge to immediately assume that terrorism is a problem brought about by Islam. Muslims must also shun baseless and provocative calls to 'defend their religion'. It is pretty obvious Sheikh Aboud Rogo was assassinated by the not-so-covert extrajudicial execution squad in the rogue Kenya Police. It is also obvious our security chiefs (whose tenure is currently Constitutionally challenged) are happy to justify their continued usefulness to the counter-terrorism godfathers in the US and UK. The political architects of these couple of murders(in State House) will certainly use the killings to request more funding - after all these are 'counter-terrorism operations' supposedly done on behalf of the West. Aboud Rogo is about the fourth target eliminated or disappeared shortly after Kibaki arrived back from London. You can take this to the bank - the so called tensions between Muslims and Christians are also instigated (manufactured) by these devious (PNU) state agents...for a number of reasons:
(1) to exaggerate the financial cost of 'containing' the aftermath of the assassination operations.
Containment of a large scale religious war (which in reality is non-existent) calls for a lot of cash... Our security agencies will now send a bigger bill to the foreign godfathers...and more money will be available to be eaten preceding the elections. (2) artificially manufactured tensions at the coast are part of PNU's divide-and-rule game in local politics...in an effort to peel off ODM Muslims (especially of Arab extraction) towards Balala's flailing campaign. This is yet another gun-barrel effort to disintegrate ODM's strength at the coast before the elections. A constituency is being created for Balala using bloodshed and terror; because Balala failed to mobilize it peacefully. Towards this end, the NSIS engaged in leaflet-dropping propaganda (akin to 2007 campaigns) by falsely linking Raila to the assassination: www.the-star.co.ke/classicnews/91940-prime-minister-denies-ordering-assasination...coincidentally such propaganda were also written here on JUKWAA (this time pointing at the virtually non-existent Obama-Raila axis). PNU is doing everything in its capacity (even through terror) to shrink ODM's strength. Whether its through the pouring of billions into pockets of tribal leaders, or other means...like in Ruto, Mudavadi's case, PNU is also determined to hand Balala a Muslim exodus constituency as well. All this in a bid to stop Raila from ascending to the Presidency. (3) The much publicised 'killing' and 'maiming' of police was meant to justify more police clampdowns....Locals will now be expected to be more accommodative to future police action.... (4) The timing of this state-manufactured terror- just in time for passing the discriminative Anti-Terrorism Bill which was previously opposed by many Muslims. [/b] There should now be expected less resistance to the law; which will frankly infringe on the new Constitution's bill of rights. The idiot called Balala will one day rue the day he decided to play ball with these PNU mandarins. He hasn't probably realized he is cavorting with the devil himself. Once the terror bill is passed, many of Balala's kin will be the first victims....Police will now arbitrarily label many of them as 'terrorists' then be allowed to seize their property, intercept their communications, and clamp down on their meetings...without court recourse. The matapeli na wagongaji in the PNU-controlled forces will easily extort and rob from Balala's own kin - in the name of terrorism. For fear of being labelled terrorist, many will pay heavily to these cons. Besides, prolonged detentions will be allowed, with no contact with lawyers during interrogations for involvement in any so called terrorist activities. These are the new tools to subdue the Coasterians and other Muslims..including the MRC...just before tapping of more natural resources and investments in big infrastructure projects (e.g. Lamu Port) ensue. Those with eyes can see. [/blockquote]

Unfortunately, I cannot get my hands on that article. May be somebody can and post it here on the board.
